I think I’ve must had about 5 or 6 different Indian visual effects companies spamming me over the past few months – often refusing to honour my subsequent reply asking for removal. When that happens, I report them to their ISPs and web hosts accordingly.
While I appreciate the VFX industry is very competitive (even if they do remind me of modern sweatshops these days – no wonder artists and engineers are looking to unionise), there’s absolutely no need to trawl web sites and now – it seems – IMDb Pro and spam the hell out of people.
Why would anybody want ME to use their services? I’m not a producer, I’m not a supervisor, and I’m not a director. I’m a systems administrator – I can render stuff for you wholesale (actually I lie: I’d make a nice markup on that). So what possible purpose do you think I would have for your services?
I will say this: if I ever did make a film I would never choose any facility based in India, or any facility that has Indian facilities out of sheer bloody mindedness. That may seem highly unfair, but until the Indian VFX scene starts to keep itself in check and stop relying on email spamming to get themselves noticed – sanctions seem the way forward.
If you want people to pick your facility – create wonderful effects. Someone will notice, and somebody will use you (and from there, other people will notice and so on).
