You know, I’m getting almightily sick and tired of Associated Newspapers and the Mail Online/Daily Mail getting away with what is tantamount to bullying and ridiculing the LGBT community – especially that of transwomen. Quite why the Leveson inquiry team hasn’t gotten around to bitchslapping these useless muckers is beyond me.
The latest “point and laugh” article from the Daily Mail (PDF copy here) refers to Lana Wachowski, sibling to Andy Wachowski, both whom are famous for writing and directing the Matrix trilogy. Except that Lana is a transwoman and is still in the process of transition. Yet for the editors of the Daily Mail/Mail Online this is open season on taking the piss out of transpeople.
What should be an article on the Wachowski’s new film, Cloud Atlas, it instead focuses primarily on Lana and her transition. It is exploitative and cruel.
They keep referring to Lana as ‘he’ constantly throughout the article and refers to Lana as a “transexual”. Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear. Clearly the “Daily Mail Reporter” – somebody who is too much of a coward to identify themselves for the purposes of the article’s author – hasn’t a single clue about what transexualism is, or what gender dystophia/identify disorders are all about.
Instead of doing some research and looking into this, the Daily Mail/Mail Online simply take the stance of pointing, starring and laughing at Lana instead. They subsequently invite comments ranging from ‘freak’ through to ‘Barf. Why do we need to know this. Why can’t people keep their sex lives personal? Why do they have to share? Tired of it.’ (it has nothing to do with sex life), and other equally vile comments.
I suppose the good thing that comes out of all this is that it highlights the stupid and feckwitted (regardless of whatever disclaimer the Mail puts on its web site). But the Daily Mail/Online had better be careful – if it continues to harass and make jokes of serious issues like this, they’re going to find themselves at the wrong end of a very nasty lawsuit or government intervention for it’s piss poor “reporting”. The article mentions that the Wachowski’s are worth £50 million – quite sufficient to hire lawyers to sort the Daily Mail out I’d have thought.
