I find it hard to believe that you increased the budget for season two when the visual effects for this season are some of the very worst I’ve seen for a long form series such as this. The quality of some of that compositing is just dreadful.
The entire White Walker (you know, the one on horseback and for whom I’ve given the name “Reg Shoe”) sequence, for example -shot in a studio and composited to hell and back -is just awful. I felt like I was watching a computer game cut scene. I know deadlines are tight, but come on now.
Bring back Blue Bolt for season 3. Pixomondo does not deserve the contract based on what I’ve seen that season. Pipelines be damned, there could (and should) have been better ways of dealing with the amount of work for season two’s VFX.
Technicalities aside, season two is just as good as season one in terms of plot, performance and dialogue. Peter Dinklage continues to thoroughly impress me in his role as Tyrion Lannister (the only Lannister that has a conscience and is sensible enough to try and stop the war). But that’s what I like about Game of Thrones: it’s casting. A good ensemble makes for great performances and that makes for great entertainment.
Fix the VFX for season three, HBO. Fix it.
