The Spotify Film Soundtrack of the Week: Battle Beyond the Stars..

Update 25th November 2012: The licensing chumps at Spotify have since removed this soundtrack. I have consequently stopped paying for a subscription because Spotify is in effect no more than a glorified paid-for preview service.

Many years ago, when I was but a small boy growing up in North East London, my dad took me to the cinema to watch Battle Beyond the Stars, produced by Roger Corman and directed by Jimmy T. Murakami.

Given the film was released in 1980 I’d have only been four years old, so we may have seen a re-release when I was a little older. I am, however, absolutely certain of watching it at the cinema before it made subsequent numerous re-runs on television.

Having been hooked on Star Wars prior to seeing this film, Battle absolutely appealed to me (except for the lizard guy, he terrified quite me a bit at first, but so did Yoda!) It had spaceships, exotic aliens, battles – everything a young boy wanted from a film.

So I’m pleased to see that Spotify is currently carrying the original soundtrack – complete with sound effects and everything. If you have Spotify, the entire album will display below for immediate streaming.

It’s an absolutely great soundtrack, and is perhaps James Horner’s greatest score to date. Whether or not you agree with me, I just know that the main theme has been a constant earworm for over two decades!
