I’ve been using Google’s Nest Protect for close to 10 years now, and it’s now time to replace it. Except that Google has stopped selling Nest Protect and has recommended a third-party compatible device which isn’t even on sale in the US (or anywhere else) yet.
So I’m probably going to choose a big dumb smoke detector alongside a separate carbon monoxide detector because while the system has been very good over the 10 years that I’ve been using it – Google’s reluctance to continue selling the product and pulling the rug beneath consumer’s feet so often makes me distrust them with any further hardware purchases. While the Pixel 7 Pro was a wonderful phone, the updates weren’t brilliant and neither was the support. Apple may have its flaws, but I significantly trust them more with hardware purchases than Google, Samsung or Microsoft.
