You'll believe one man and his[1] dog can fly...

.. thanks to James Gunn's Superman.

I must admit I was initially concerned and worried about this film when I first saw the trailers, but I shouldn't have.  Having just watched it on Apple TV, I can safely say that I thoroughly enjoyed this film.  It respects the films that came before it.  It respects the legacy of Christopher Reeve.  It's very entertaining, and the real star of the show (in my opinion) is a CG dog called Krypto, beautifully animated by Framestore's Montreal studio.

Effectively it is the story of a man trying to do good in a world gone mad.  Nicholas Hoult makes for a very good Lex Luthor - hell bent on getting rid of David Corenswet's Superman.  Rachel Brosnahan plays the marvellous Miss Lois Lane who is absolutely aware of Clark Kent's secret identity (as well as just about everybody else).   Honourable mentions go to the Justice Gang (not quite ready for the Justice League yet) whose methods of dealing with a monster rampaging downtown Metropolis are somewhat frowned upon by Superman.  And this is the first DC live action movie to incorporate Metamorpho - the man who can transmute elements in his body into various forms.

As this is a James Gunn movie, you know what you're going to get upfront: an entertaining, amusing, action-filled heartfelt romp of a visual spectacle - the kind of blockbuster that's worth going to see in the cinema (which I now regret not doing).  I enjoyed it immensely.

[1] Krypto actually belongs to Superman's cousin - Supergirl.  And boy, are we going to get a very different version from Helen Slater's 1984 movie when the new Supergirl film is eventually released.
