I despair for future generations

Rowling aside (as with many other authors who are being boycotted for whatever reason), why aren’t people bothering to read the books (or listen to the audiobooks) rather than wait every X number of years for studios to keep “refreshing” IP for TV or the movies? Are newer generations that lazy or too busy to spend time reading the source material now? Film, TV and theatre are not books.

But if we are talking specifically about IP that lives in film and TV space – imagine the outcry if this were Star Wars and Disney decided to refresh the original trilogy for a new generation1?

  1. One could argue the “sequels” to the original trilogy are essentially the updates – The Force Awakens essentially borrows huge chunks of plot from A New Hope. ↩︎
